ROBERT M asked:

I have an Emerson Digital Video Recorder (Composite Video Out) connected to a Panasonic Video Cassette Recorder (Composite Video In). The VCR (RF Out) is connected to a Sharp Television (RF In). Both the DRV and VCR are connected to Comcast Cable via RF In.

I set the TV to channel 3 to display the output from the VCR. I set the VCR to ‘Line 1′ to pass the DVR output to the TV. I set the DVR to channel 6 (KDKA in Pittsburgh).

When I press ‘Display’ on the VCR remote, the time, tape count and channel are displayed on the TV. With the equipment set up as described above, KDKA is displayed by the VCR as the channel.

How does the VCR know what channel is selected on the DVR when they are connected via Composite Video? This only works with some channels. Other channels display ‘Line 1′ as I would expect.

Brent asked:

My mom is too cheap for cable and recording to DVD on her DVD burner is becoming a hassle. I would like to find a DVR that I can connect to her tv that she could just record her shows to a flash drive, without a computer. I also know she wouldn’t pay for a subscription. I have heard of some in the UK, but not sure about the US.

Here’s an example, but I can’t seem to find it or anything like it anywhere online:

Help please before I purchase anything else.
I’m not sure about the DTVPal- and thanks for the other one w/ event timer. I have a digitalstream9500 now & it’s ok- but I’m looking for tape & view without hassle. Before hooking up the 2nd converter box for “tape & view” I was also wondering about a Digital TV and vhs/dvr “tuner”- are there any that allow vhs recording or just playback? I understand you need 2 “tuners”- but just started looking into the whole works- any suggestions on these combos? I can learn the dvd recording option, but I’m used to vhs… I’m wondering if a new set up like this will let me record weekly shows ? Thanks

A “SC189 Photograph Vehicle Mount Video Recorder Camcorder with Audio & Night Vision” from Pickegg, $40.49 with no freight cost. Sorry, I can not post link here, you can just search by yourself. Thank you.
